Glimpse of my life |
As I mentioned earlier, taking the bus is not an easy task in Miami. Or, to be more specific, it requires a perfect knowledge of the bus stops locations in order to make sure you won't miss a bus during a transfer and thus wait up to one hour for the next bus to come.
Tuesday 24th
For this reason, I have decided to put on stand-by my obligation to take the bus. And I am lucky because my colleagues are really sweet and offer to drive me to my visits after work. I accept the proposition of one of them. After work, we both go to her place for about one hour. Indeed, I end my working day at 5:30 (she does at 6pm so I work until 6) and my first visit is at 7:45. At 7:25, me leave her apartment. Of course we are late for the visit but I keep texting the lady that I am on my way. We park along with other cars, just in front of the hotel, in South Beach (because some people live in a hotel during the whole year... Please remember I am in Miami!). The security is intense; they take picture of the two of us and ask for the owner to come to show her ID as well. At least, this place is safe! The lady sort of refuses to talk to me in English. For sure, I am glad I understand a bit of Spanish and I am even happier that my colleague is from Uruguay. She is the only one speaking to the owner.
On the Craigslist ad, it was specifically written that she was renting a private room. I am not demanding; all I am asking for is a room of my own. I don't mind sharing the bathroom or the kitchen, but I need my privacy. Instead of a private room, she put a screen (="paravent", in French) in her living-room behind which a small bed is hidden. Awesome, that is definitely my definition of a private room! There is just no way I am renting this place.
This took approximately 5'.
We go back to the car... No car!!! We freak out, but yes, the car is gone. There is a guy who asks us (in Spanish of course) if it was our car parked here, because they impounded it about 2 minutes before. We are of course really upset (no need to say how terrible and guilty I feel). We take a cab which drives us about 1 mile away and the driver explains to us that it is the hotel who asked to take the car (they earn $30 every time they denounce a car not properly parked; I guess it is some kind of corruption...). The bill is of $205 for those 2' in the pound and the car is broken...
Now we are approximately 40' late for my second visit. We go anyway (of course I texted to apologize) and it is this French tall tanned and muscled guy who shows me the way. He is also renting a room in the apartment. Of course, since he is French, we discuss and I realize how crazy the owner is. Here again, they described the place as a private room when it is actually just a bed hidden by curtains. But I have to admit that the view is INCREDIBLE! The apartment is located on the 16th floor and there is no other building facing my potential window. At night, with all the lights of the city turned on, it is just beautiful. And the location is incredible too, since it is South Beach's heart as well, at a walking distance from clubs and bars. And there is a pool and a gym in the building. But, as I said, the owner is apparently crazy: he put cameras everywhere in the apartment (except in the bedrooms and bathroom). Who does that, seriously?? And there is always the fact that even if South Beach is the place to be in Miami when you are about my age, it remains far from work.
I am going back home, hopeless.
Wedneday 25th
I have another visit. This time, the price is really affordable and it is in the same district than Flora. Thus, it is at a walking distance from work and there is a pool and the gym for free :) The woman who makes the visit is in her fourties. She tells me she lives here with her husband and a guy from Quebec who is about 60. Ok, those potential roommates won't be my best friends... But if they are nice people and quiet, that is all I can ask for. The (private for real this time!) room is small and when I open my door, I am in the kitchen. It is far from perfect, but the price and location are really good and I have AC in my room. I'll go for it!

Thursday 26th
For lunch, we shared pizzas offered by the company because it is Flora's last day (we are not working tomorrow!). And after work, we all go to this cozy place where you can have tapas and a drink outdoors. Next to me is the CEO of the company. I don't think it is smart to get drunk on my first week.. Just one mojito and I already feel dizzy; I guess the heat is not helping, but still, I used to be much better at drinking! I need to practice again in the next few weeks! Nice way to get to know people!! I don't know how much is the bill but, once again, the company is paying for it; sweet.
Friday 27th
On Friday evening, I pay my deposit. I can finally feel free!! I have my room, my keys and I can move in at the beginning of next week.

Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th
I can enjoy the sun, the pool and the gym. Time to relax and start to get a little tanner. I feel pale right now! However, the heat is so important, it is impossible to stay in the sun more than one hour. Some people stay way longer, but I guess I need some time to adapt to this new life.
Maybe I will keep writing the dates after all... I'll see!
